Mercedes-AMG now hold the top two lap records for production cars around the famed Nurburgring Nordschleife race track. The Formula 1 derived Mercedes-AMG ONE set the fastest lap ever for a street legal production car with a time of 6:35.183 minutes around the 20.832 kilometre/12.944 mile track. The second fastest time around the Ring is held by a 720 hp Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series with a time of 6:43.616. Rounding out the top three is the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ with a time of 6:44.97.
“That was really an unforgettable experience,” said race car driver Maro Engel after setting the record lap in the Mercedes-AMG ONE. “I didn’t expect that we would be able to set such a lap time with these track conditions. In some crucial areas of the track, it hadn’t dried completely yet and was therefore tricky. That was a special challenge. We tried to find the optimal deployment strategy during the pre-tests. Like Lewis Hamilton and George Russell on their race weekends, I also had to deploy the electrical energy of the hybrid drive in the best possible way. That’s not easy, especially with this length of track. In addition, the DRS function had to be used optimally. But that’s also a real Formula 1 feeling. I would like to thank you for this opportunity and the trust you’ve placed in me. It was definitely something very special to drive this incredible car on the Ring.”
"I’m proud of the whole AMG team – everyone who was involved in this project,” said Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑AMG GmbH. “The various departments in Affalterbach as well as our colleagues at HPP in Brixworth never gave up and continued to push the dream of this vehicle. This success is the well-deserved reward for their hard work. Even though the AMG ONE is certainly more at home on a Grand Prix circuit than on the Nordschleife – as is so often the case with this project – we’ve simply gone one step further. We’re the first ever to have taken on the challenges of the Nürburgring with a super sports car. That’s also what makes this project so unique and I’m very happy about this fantastic lap time."
The hybrid hypercar Mercedes-AMG ONE is powered by one gasoline powered internal combustion engine and four electric motors. Total power is 1,063 hp with 574 hp coming from the 1.6-litre V6 engine, which redlines at a lofty 11,000 rpm. Top speed ‘limited’ to 352 km/h or 218 miles per hour.
Power is sent to all four wheels by the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all‑wheel drive system. It has hybrid-driven rear-wheel drive and electric only front-wheel drive. The front wheels are 10 x 19 inch with 285/35 ZR 19 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R M0 tires, and 12 x 20 inch rear wheels shod with massive 335/30 ZR 20 tires that were designed specifically for the ONE by Michelin.
To set the lap record, the drive program was set to Race Plus which uses maximum aerodynamics and lowers the car by 1.45 inches/37 mm at the front and 1.18 inches/30 mm at the rear. Like its formula 1 counterpart, the Mercedes-AMG ONE is equipped with a Drag Reduction System or DRS. The driver activates it by pushing a button on the steering wheel which retracts the front louvres on the wings and the upper aero element of the two-stage rear wing reducing drag and increasing top speed.
Only 275 Mercedes-AMG ONE’s will be built. The base price is approximately $2.75 million USD or $3.6 million CAD.
