The Infiniti Q60 Project Black S and Project 9 were unveiled for the first time in Canada at the 2018 Canadian International AutoShow. On hand for the unveilings were Infiniti’s Global Head of Design, Karim Habib, and Adam Paterson, Managing Director of Infiniti Canada.

The Q60 Project Black S Concept is a collaborative effort between Infiniti and the Renault Sport Formula One Team. The performance hybrid powertrain being explored through Project Black S features an energy recovery system (ERS) to harvest energy, deploying recovered electric power to boost power and torque. Inspired by the dual-hybrid system proven in Formula 1, it provides instant, significant, lag-free acceleration. This technology does not yet exist in a current road car.

The Prototype 9 Concept car represents a reimagining of a 1930s race car with time-honoured production techniques employed for the retro design. The Prototype 9 is a combination of the past and future in one car. It is an open-wheel electric roadster prototype inspired by an emerging era of Japanese motorsport.

“I spent many hours on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve when I was growing up in Montreal, and I am very excited to present Project Black S – which is the potential for a new INFINTI performance grade – as well as Prototype 9 – inspired by an emerging era of Japanese motorsport,” said Karim Habib. “Both concepts share a common ground in auto racing, while their stories remain different. Hinting to the performance potential of a production ‘Black S’ model, the use of carbon fiber has allowed us to sculpt thin, blade-like design forms, combined with the original Q60’s deep creases. This would not be possible with traditional materials, such as metal or fiberglass.”
