Following up on the release of the DB12 Coupe earlier this year, Aston Martin has unveiled their all-new DB12 Volante soft-top convertible. Under the hood of this elegant 2+2 grand tourer, or Super Tourer as Aston Martin has proclaimed it, is the same 4 litre twin-turbo 671 hp V8 engine found in its hard-top sibling.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission with five drive modes; Wet, GT, Sport, Sports Plus and Individual. Its 21 inch wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 5 S which have a compound specifically made for the DB12. It has 275/35 ZR21’s up front and 325/30 ZR21’s in the rear.
590 lb-ft of torque from 2,750-6,000 rpm helps launch this two-ton convertible from 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds, 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. Top speed is 202 mph or 325 km/h. Now that is a lot of wind in your hair.
“For many of our customers, roof down driving is the greatest pleasure” Amedeo Felisa, Aston Martin’s CEO
“Aston Martin Volantes have captured that emotion and expressed it in unique style for more than six decades. With the new DB12 Volante we have changed the rules, creating a car that intensifies those feelings by preserving all the purity and exceptional sporting capabilities of the DB12 Coupe. A rare and true sporting convertible in every respect, this is a car to challenge preconceptions and find a new generation of Volante customer”.
“Volante possesses all the Super Tourer traits so successfully introduced in the DB12 Coupe,” Said Roberto Fedeli, Aston Martin’s Chief Technical Officer. “That we have preserved this class-leading performance and handling is testament to the underlying brilliance of the DB12 platform and the work we have done to maintain the advantage of its superb powertrain and chassis in an open-top version. No longer the ‘softer’ option, DB12 Volante offers the stimulation of a true sports car with the unique pleasure and satisfaction that only a convertible Aston Martin can deliver.”
The electrically-operated ‘K-fold’ roof lowers in 14 seconds and raises in 16 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h or 31 mph. For buyers outside of the US market, the top can also be operated with the key fob when you are standing within 2 metres of the car. The two-stage folding soft-top features 8 layers of insulation to help reduce interior cabin noise.
“Creating open-air performance machines for drivers has always held a special place in hearts across Aston Martin, dating back to 1965, with our introduction of the first Volante model, the legendary Short Chassis,” Said Marek Reichman, Aston Martin’s Chief Creative Officer. “It has been, and always will be, a design beacon for us. The new DB12 Volante is again another emotional Aston Martin design form with a desire to be driven. We’ve sculpted a graceful, muscular exterior shape that reflects its immense capabilities, set atop very advanced structural elements, with a clean, contemporary interior. Crafted through performance design for those who share our joy and happiness for adventuring in cars in the open air, new DB12 Volante is certainly exhilarating to experience and one that adds to our distinctive history.”
The DB12 Volante will make its worldwide debut at Monterey Car Week in California which runs from August 11-20. Production is set to commence in Q3 of 2023 with deliveries beginning during Q4 of 2023. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet but estimates are that the DB12 coupe will cost around a quarter of a million dollars US, with the convertible costing more.
